In some industries, police checks are mandatory, and it is illegal for someone who has been restricted from working with children or vulnerable people to do so.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading has-primary-color has-text-color\"><strong>So, who needs a police check?&nbsp;<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-primary-color has-text-color wp-block-paragraph\">Certain industries are likely to require police checks as part of their pre-employment screening. This may be because a conviction has been spent \u2013 where more than ten years has passed since the offence (if committed by an adult, five years if the offender was a minor at the time).&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-primary-color has-text-color wp-block-paragraph\">In addition to spent convictions, a police check may not show:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul style=\"color:#19419b\" class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Charges that have been dropped,&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Findings of non-guilt&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Traffic infringements not involving convictions (e.g. fines and cautions)&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-primary-color has-text-color wp-block-paragraph\">However, it\u2019s worth noting that these things <em>will<\/em> appear on a Working With Children check. This is because candidates who undergo a Working With Children check will have contact with children and vulnerable groups, so an abundance of caution is used. Once submitted, a result is received right away in 70% of cases. For the remaining 30%, the process can take up to 10 or more days.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul style=\"color:#19419b\" class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><em>How long is a police check valid for?<\/em>&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-primary-color has-text-color wp-block-paragraph\">Police checks do not have a validity period as they are point-in-time checks issues for a specific purpose. This means they cannot be used for multiple positions. Each organisation will have different periods of time in which they recheck their police checks to ensure the information is up to date as an offence may have occurred since the previous check was run.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul style=\"color:#19419b\" class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><em>Can I get a job if I have a criminal history?<\/em>&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-primary-color has-text-color wp-block-paragraph\">Yes. Though there are roles you will not qualify for, there are plenty of industries and positions that will employ someone with a criminal history.
