And why should they? Social media is something you engage in during your free time,&nbsp;employers&nbsp;don\u2019t see that, right?&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-primary-color has-text-color wp-block-paragraph\">Wrong.&nbsp;Many people forget that, depending on your privacy settings, information posted online is publicly available, accessible to friends, family \u2013 and prospective employers.&nbsp;Employers very well may look up a candidate\u2019s social media profile.&nbsp;And&nbsp;if&nbsp;they discover&nbsp;posts&nbsp;about&nbsp;frequent&nbsp;wild nights out,&nbsp;sensitive photographs,&nbsp;or engagement&nbsp;in lewd or illegal activities online, they\u2019re likely to pass over that candidate.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:0px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center has-primary-color has-text-color has-normal-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cAn increasing number of&nbsp;organisations&nbsp;now see social media as a legitimate way to answer questions about a person\u2019s suitability for a job, find the best cultural fit, and prevent bad hires.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center has-primary-color has-text-color has-small-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">&#8211; Angela Preston, SVP and Counsel, Corporate Ethics and Compliance at Sterling<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:2px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-primary-color has-text-color wp-block-paragraph\">The idea of getting a holistic view of a candidate is one that is attractive to many employers. According to a 2018&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.prnewswire.com\/news-releases\/more-than-half-of-employers-have-found-content-on-social-media-that-caused-them-not-to-hire-a-candidate-according-to-recent-careerbuilder-survey-300694437.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">survey<\/a>&nbsp;conducted in the US by CareerBuilder, 70% of employers check out a candidate\u2019s social media profile during the hiring process.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-primary-color has-text-color wp-block-paragraph\">Of course, this varies by industry, with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.prnewswire.com\/news-releases\/more-than-half-of-employers-have-found-content-on-social-media-that-caused-them-not-to-hire-a-candidate-according-to-recent-careerbuilder-survey-300694437.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">CareerBuilder<\/a> revealing the top industries using social media screening to be IT and Manufacturing.
